The Rise and Fall of

19th - 21st June 2006

Little Voice has been called 'a northern showbiz fairytale', 'an ugly duckling tale', 'a backstreet Cinderella story'. All of these descriptions suggest an element of magic and escapism yet the play is rooted firmly in the real life of the northern working class. Our characters strive for a better life, a way out of their humdrum, everyday existence.

Little Voice herself shuts herself away in her room listening to the records that her dead father loved so much. She has become so immersed in these records that she can imitate the divas that sing them at will. Her loud and overbearing mother has hooked up with local theatrical agent Ray Say, and one night when the power cuts out, Ray hears the talent of LV upstairs in the darkness. From this moment on, Ray Say knows that Little Voice has a unique gift and that this voice has to be heard. But how can this desperately shy girl perform in front of an audience at the local working men's club when she can hardly bring herself to answer the newly installed telephone or talk to the almost equally shy phone engineer who has taken a shine to her. In fact, she can only 'become' these legends when the lights are off!
